It speaks to us of the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Shining diyas, candles and lanterns reflect our deepest hopes for humanity, and assure us that goodness and truth will always prevail.

As you gather to celebrate, pray, and share meals and gifts, may this special time uplift you with hope for a bright future.

These rituals have become an intrinsic part of the face of modern Australia. As you honour the traditions of the land of your heritage, you enrich the land that is your home.

Across generations, people have found a new home and sense of belonging here in Australia, and woven their faith, language and culture into our nation’s story, along with your hard work, your aspirations and your love of country.

I am grateful to the Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist communities for the rich range of contributions you have made to our nation.

At Diwali, all Australians join you in giving thanks for the bonds of family, friendship and community.
