The Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW condemns in the strongest possible terms the disgusting acts of racism committed against members of the Chinese community in Eastgardens, and more recently, additional reported incidents in the Sydney metropolitan areas.
Australia is a multicultural society, and we are enriched and empowered by our diversity, and these acts are not only disgraceful but also un-Australian. We stand with the victims and also with all Australians of Asian and Chinese descent against racism in all its forms.
The Ethnic Communities’ Council the peak body representing multicultural communities in NSW is available to provide assistance to those communities or individuals affected in any way.
Seven children have now been charged over the violent assault of a Chinese woman and her husband in Sydney’s east, after graphic footage of the incident sparked public outrage. NSW Police said the couple were allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers at their Eastgardens apartment complex on Wednesday, 21 May 2025. Two 12-year-old girls were initially charged, and five more children — aged between 11 and 16 — have since been arrested and charged as part of an ongoing investigation. All have been granted conditional bail to appear in children’s court in June.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Australian community has created a petition calling for tougher measures against youth crime. The petition — signed by mostly people from the Chinese Australian community — urges the NSW government to lower the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 10 for serious offenses and to deny bail to repeat youth offenders. More than 27,000 people have signed a petition calling for tougher youth crime laws, after a Chinese couple was violently assaulted in Sydney’s east last week. The petition, which gained traction on Chinese social media platforms RedNote and WeChat, was launched after the woman and her husband were allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers outside their Eastgardens apartment complex.
