The Premier has condemned a targeted antisemitic act of terror, describing it as an attack that goes against the values Australians stand for and occurred at a time meant for joy, safety and celebration for Jewish families.
In a statement, the Premier said Victorians were struggling to comprehend the hatred and violence of the attack, extending sympathies to the victims and their families, as well as to witnesses, first responders and members of the public who acted with courage amid fear and chaos.
Addressing Jewish Victorians directly, the Premier said no one should have to live in fear in Australia and affirmed that Jewish people belong in the country “fully, safely and without question.”
The Premier confirmed discussions with Jewish leaders and said the Victorian Government and Victoria Police would provide full support to ensure Hanukkah could be observed safely, freely and without fear.
Describing Hanukkah as a sacred time of light and renewal, the Premier said no act of hatred would be allowed to diminish its meaning, concluding that the attack marked a heartbreaking day for the nation but did not define who Australians are.
